We like to experience the cuisine of different cultures, so this time we visited a locally owned Greek restaurant called Molon Labe Souvlaki located in the Sam’s Plaza in Fort Myers. They have been open for over a year and a half now. Owners George and Melis have created a gem of a restaurant here in Fort Myers. George can be found in the kitchen preparing all their wonderful, mouthwatering meals and his passion and experience can be seen and tasted. Melis is found in the front of the house, serving her customers. Melis is a gracious host and explains all their dishes. Her love for what they do and her pride in her heritage shine through. She treats you like family even when it is your first time there.
Molon Labe roughly means come and take [them] and is a classical expression of defiance. It is attributed to King Leonidas of Sparta. So, their current décor is based on the movie This is Sparta including helmets on the tables and other décor items. Most notable is the photo mural of King Leonidas from the movie. Souvlaki is Greek dish of pieces of meat grilled on a skewer (which they do serve). So to me their name is an invitation to try their food.
So, can we talk about their food. It was outstanding. There were so many authentic dishes to try but started with the Golmadakia (grape Leaves) $6.99 for 5. They were stuffed with rice and spinach and served on top of a light lemon sauce. For entrees we settled on the Lamb Gyro platter $13.99. It comes with 2 sides and is served Meze which means everything is separate. We chose Greek salad, Spanakoriza (rice and spinach) and Greek Fries. All I can say what a wonderful meal. The portions are huge, and everything was seasoned to perfection.
For dessert we had the Baklava, made by Melis, which was outstanding. The filling was perfect, and it was not dripping in honey which is often the case. I tried the Greek coffee. It was excellent. Melis explained about the coffee grounds at the bottom of the cup and how it can be used to tell one’s fortune.
We were told they are closing for a few weeks and will re-open on August 1 with a new menu and a new look. We will be back for sure to try some of their other dishes. So, if you like Greek food and want it authentic, then be sure to give them a try.
