Sports bars are very popular in SWFL. We googled it and there were 6 pages with 20 on a page. That is a lot of sports bars. Standing out among all the others can be challenging. There is the food, service, size and number of TV’s, atmosphere and location. Sometimes one may crave sports bar food. After-all it is rather comfort type food. We ventured out and decided to try the Sandbar and Grille in the South Plaza.
This location has also been home to Shells Seafood Restaurant and Ker’s WingHouse as well Beefsteak Charley’s, Black Angus, Grand Buffet and a host of other long forgotten restaurants.
Sandbar Grille is an open and airy, fun place to enjoy sports or entertainment. Who doesn’t like to sit outside, enjoy adult beverages and listen to live music especially during the winter months? They have plenty of TV, a nice bar area, large dining area and outdoor seating. Granted it is a view of S Cleveland Ave but when the weather is nice, it is great to be outdoors.
We were in the mood for a burger and sandwich. I had the Steakhouse Burger ($12.99) – Half pound of ground sirloin served on a brioche bun with cheddar cheese, grilled onions and topped with 2 house made onion rings. Served with A-1 sauce. My dining partner had Steak Philly Sub ($10.99) -Thinly sliced steak sauteed with peppers, onions and provolone cheese. Served on a fresh hoagie roll. We both opted for the tater tots (an up charge). I have to say that my burger was very good as were the tater tots. The Steak Philly was tasty as well. The server struck us as being new to serving and while she checked on us, it was quite often. Of course, I had to have my coffee which was a bit strong.
Compared to other sports bars around, Sandbar and Grille is a tad better than most.
