There is one thing we have been craving in Fort Myers and that is good Cuban food. While we now have more choices than before we opted to try the newly open Cubans Be Like. You will find them in the Cypress Trace shopping center US 41 and Cypress Lake Drive. They opened on January 15, 2021.
The atmosphere is warm, fun, and upbeat. Lot’s of color and of course salsa music. They have a small bar, outdoor seating, and a small stage for when they have live music or a DJ. The have a swing that is perfect for photo op’s or when waiting for a table.
When we were walking in, a customer was leaving and made a point to tell us we were going to love the food. We were excited to try their food and now we were even more excited. We were warmly greeted immediately and taken to our table. Our server was Altana and she was excellent. She answered all our questions, would check on us to see if we needed anything, and asked if we wanted dessert and or coffee.
We started with some cocktails as we had to try a mojito. I had the mango mojito. It was absolutely great. Just enough mint, sugar cane and rum that blended well with the mango. My dining partner had Malibu Rum and pineapple juice which was also well made.
My dining partner ordered the Garlic Shrimp “Al Ajillo” ($15.95) Shrimp sauteed in creamy garlic sauce and white wine. I ordered the Grilled Pork Chops marinated in Cuban Mojo ($14.95) All entrees come with 2 sides we had white rice, sweet potato fries, arroz moro, sweet plantains and an addition side of yucca with mojo. The kitchen was a bit slow at first but then we noticed that the other diners before us were beginning to get their food. The more we saw the other dishes the more excited we got as they all looked amazing and the portions were all large. I have to say we were not disappointed at all.
The shrimp was cooked perfectly, the cream sauce was light and not heavy at all. If you like garlic this dish is for you as flavors were balanced and the garlic added to flavors and did not overpower the shrimp at all. My dining partner said it was to die for and I totality agreed.
The pork chops (2) were covered with onions and marinated in the mojo. They were thin cut so if not careful they can be easily overcooked. That was not the case here at all. They were delicioso! All the side dishes were also perfect. The yucca with mojo were crisp and not overdone.
We opted for the Angie’s Special ($7.95) when they did not have the Tres Leche cake. What is the Angie’s Special you ask? A Brownie with vanilla ice cream. Not all brownies are alike and this one was moist and rich in chocolate flavor. The vanilla ice cream was sooo good!!! We also had a Café con Leche, one of my favorites and this one did not disappoint.
If you enjoy Cuban food, then you will want to be sure to dine at Cubans Be Like. They are locally owned too.
